[vc_row][/vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]Environmental education is a fundamental axis of any comprehensive intervention on environmental issues, as the public awareness can ensure the implementation of the respective policies. For this purpose, in the context of the LIFE DEBAG Project, an environmental education program has been designed/ implemented, which:
Is based on the holistic (multidisciplinary and interdisciplinary) approach of the environmental problem which the Project deals with.
Enables a customized implementation at a local level (Syros and other Cycladic Islands), with the potentiality, however, of exploitation in other parts of the country also.
Consists of different educational tools aimed at both students and teachers of all education levels and offer a combination of actions, inside and outside of the school. The basic tools which form the backbone of the training activities of the LIFE DEBAG Project are:
Educational Package
The main body of the Educational Package consists of the Worksheets and the Factsheets, through which the students approach, in a holistic manner, the issues relating to the pollution of the coastal and marine environment by plastic bags. The package is structured in such a way that the students will understand the basic concepts (plastic packaging, plastic bag, marine litter), will be informed about the impacts of plastic bags and will learn simple options for reducing the use of plastic bags and ultimately eliminate the problem.
The design of the Educational Package enables its use and exploitation by teachers of all levels and specialties, regardless of pre-existing knowledge and training. It can also be used as a whole or partly, depending on the information the teacher wants to highlight, when planning/implementing his own program or when trying to stimulate particular interests of the students.
Educational Presentations
Specialized Project partners will implement free informative presentations in Syros, and other Cycladic islands. The presentations will be adjusted depending on the age of the students and will be implemented with the use of modern media, in consultation with the school Manager. These will be also accompanied by creative discussion with the students to exchange views and concerns on the particular environmental issue. Through discussion, students will be invited to seek prolific and suitable solutions mainly focusing on the actions they themselves can perform to improve the quality of their environment.
Upcycling Toolbox
The “Upcycling Toolbox” includes materials which will help the students to express themselves creatively and imaginatively on the issue of plastic bags. The students’ works will be exhibited as part of the second information-awareness raising “Plastic bag free week”, which will take place in Syros Island in 2017.
Teacher’s Guide
The Guide aims to assist the teachers in exploiting the LIFE DEBAG Project educational materials (Educational Package and Upcycling Toolbox). It includes basic information on Environmental Education (definition, objectives, illustrative methods, etc.), websites from which the teachers can draw additional educational materials or good examples, explanations and ideas for the optimal implementation of environmental educational programs on the specific themes.
Interactive Road Game
The value and effectiveness of the game in Education has been proven through numerous scientific studies. The Interactive Road Game combines entertainment with information and raises awareness about the multifaceted negative impacts on the coastal and marine environment from the use of plastic bags.
Experiential Teacher Seminar
During the “Plastic bag free week 2016”, an experiential seminar for the training of the Syros Island teachers will be implemented, which will be based on the educational material of the LIFE DEBAG Project. The seminar will aim on the one hand at informing the teachers on the issue of plastic bags and on the other hand at familiarizing them with the educational methods and techniques that have been found effective in implementing environmental educational programs.
Education Campaign Results
In the context of the Project’s Education Campaign:
- 6,070 students have attended the educational presentations of LIFE DEBAG (Syros, Paros, Naxos, Mykonos, Attica, Thessaloniki)
- 394 teachers have participated in 13 educational seminars conducted by the Project’s beneficiaries
- 853 downloads of the Worksheets and Factsheets of the Educational Package have been made
- 848 downloads of the Teacher’s Guide have been made
- 25 Upcycling Toolboxes have been distributed to the schools of Syros (20 of which were used during the “Student reusable handbag decoration competition” that took place during the spring of 2017).
